What to Wear for Winter Portraits | 3 Steps to Success

Knowing what to wear for winter portraits can seem like a daunting task.  But after I share my three easy steps to styling success, you’ll be set for life.  I promise!

Step One: Color

Whether your winters are spent in snow, or whether you just have dead grass everywhere, winters are kind of known for being void of color.  This is the perfect time for you to bring some of that color back!

When choosing a color palette, look for an outfit with a pattern.  Typically, patterns have multiple colors in them, and that’s just what you’re looking for.  Take the colors from that pattern and dress the remaining family members wearing pops of some of those colors found in the pattern.  Easy peasy.

Step Two: Layers

Even if winters where you live don’t get crazy cold, it’s still easy to wear layers.  Just think light layers instead of heavy winter jackets and sweaters.  Wearing layers for a portrait session remains true no matter what season you’re in.  Reason being that layers create depth to an image.  They always photograph well.

If your winters are more mild, think about wearing just a simple sweater with a collared shirt underneath.  If they’re colder, you’ll definitely want to go all out with hats, scarves, gloves, jackets, and boots while also keeping your color scheme in mind.

Step Three: Texture

This is one that is probably thought of the least.  Similar to layers, texture brings dimension to an image.  So if you’re struggling with creating layers, think texture.  Think about wool.  Think about cable knit sweaters.

If you’re in a mild climate, and want to wear just a plain long-sleeved t-shirt, add in a chunky knit hat with a puff ball on top to give your winter portraits some pizazz.
